Industry Takes the Initiative: An Intriguing Example from Central Vietnam

When people discuss the shortage of qualified software engineers in Vietnam, the conversation often focuses on universities and students.

From my perspective as an engineer at Enclave, the software industry must also take responsibility.

Universities provide essential academic foundations, but companies must help graduates turn that knowledge into professional engineering capability. Rather than standing outside the education system and criticizing its limitations, industry should work with universities, share practical experience, and create better pathways from the classroom to the workplace.

From Student to Professional Engineer

A graduate may understand programming languages, algorithms, databases, and software design. Real software projects, however, require more than technical knowledge.

Engineers must work with incomplete requirements, communicate clearly, collaborate with teammates, respond to change, meet deadlines, and take responsibility for quality.

This transition can be difficult, which is why Enclave developed its 12-week Software Engineering Bootcamp.

The program is designed to help graduates adapt to a professional delivery environment. Participants learn engineering standards, teamwork, communication, problem-solving, discipline, and accountability. Through practical project work, they also experience changing requirements, deadlines, unclear instructions, and the realities of working as part of a team.

The goal is not simply to create stronger programmers. It is to develop engineers who can contribute reliably to real projects.

Connecting Industry and Education

The talent challenge cannot be solved by companies or universities alone.

Universities provide academic knowledge, research, faculty expertise, and recognized qualifications. Companies provide exposure to current engineering practices, international client expectations, and production environments.

Enclave’s collaboration with the Da Nang University of Technology reflects this shared responsibility. One important result was an off-campus master’s program in computer science, with classes conducted at Enclave’s office.

This gave engineers the opportunity to continue their education while remaining actively involved in professional projects.

In September 2011, 26 Enclave engineers were expected to receive their master’s degrees from the university. They completed their studies while continuing to support their teams and overseas clients.

Their achievement shows what Vietnamese engineers can accomplish when they are given high standards, meaningful opportunities, and the right support.

Industry Must Participate

Enclave’s Bootcamp and university partnerships are more than recruitment initiatives.

Students gain a clearer understanding of professional expectations. Engineers gain access to continued learning. Universities build stronger connections with industry. Clients receive teams that are better prepared for real-world delivery.

Every stronger engineer also contributes to Central Vietnam’s reputation as a growing software development center.

Vietnam’s education system will continue to evolve, but companies should not wait for someone else to close the gap between education and employment.

At Enclave, we believe industry must take the initiative—not by replacing education, but by becoming an active partner in it.
